Arbor Noir Stool
The Arbor Noir Stool was inspired by the simplicity and beauty inherent within nature. It is a dialogue between ancient techniques and contemporary visions. Each piece represents the philosophy of wabi sabi, celebrating the unrepeatable moment when fire, wood, and human intention converge revealing a one of a kind piece.
The Process: The wood used is hand selected and sourced from local trees here in Vermont. Each piece undergoes a process of first flattening to create perfectly level and parallel surfaces. Then, is hand sculpted to create its unique textural landscape. What follows is the signature surface treatment which employs a Japanese-inspired charring technique (Shou Sugi Ban) - this creates the deep carbon black appearance. Once charred, it undergoes a multi-step process of applying a unique oil and wax blend that has been developed over the years. The oil penetrates deep into the wood hardening it from the inside out while the wax offers protection and a natural finish to the surface leaving it durable and soft at the same time.
