The exploration of simplicity is central to my work and practice as an artist. Over my lifetime I have come to realize its execution is perhaps one of the most challenging, and requires a certain level of mastery. It is a process of elimination - maintaining the essence while removing all that is unnecessary. my work therefore is in many ways about emptiness and the space in between. this piece explores simplicity, in material and expression. the inner circle created with a blend of charcoal and binding agents, while the custom made frame was burned to relate to the charcoal within. it is a play between states of carbon, states of life - thus, “altered states”.
