According to alchemists, prima materia was the original substance in which all matter arises from. It is an undifferentiated substance with the potential to be transformed into any other material. Carl Jung referred to it as the unconscious material that needs to be processed during psychological transformation. Both aspects are foundational to my process. In the beginning there is a deafening silence, total emptiness. Within this space lies infinite creative potential. Through the process material and psychological aspects are transformed together revealing the artwork. The artwork that emerges from this process is therefore an artifact. It continues to be a vehicle for transformation unto its onlookers.
